From Netflixs At Home With The Furys this is the Gypsy Warrior, Big John Fury, totally unfiltered and in his own words.
If you’re six foot three like me, eighteen stone, and you like to stand up for yourself, you’re gonna get into trouble, aren’t ya? But I wasn’t bothered about fighting; I thought I’ll have a fight with anybody. Win, lose or draw. I’m out there, shirt off, done and dusted. If you’ve got Fury DNA, you’re not shy of a fight.
Born on the side of a County Galway road in a bow-top Gypsy wagon, Big John Fury is proudly traveller at heart. He descends from a long line of bare-knuckle fighters, including King of the Gypsies, so it’s no surprise that he too found himself fighting at a young age. From his early years in Manchester, John learned to box by practising bare-knuckle fighting within the travelling community, before graduating into the sport professionally.
Outside of the ring, John’s life has been anything but ordinary. From escaping Borstal in his teenage years and living as a fugitive to breaking with traveller tradition and buying land, battling with depression and an at-times-uncontrollable temper and spending time connecting with his faith in prison. It’s safe to say that John has learned lessons the hard way but it’s the pride he feels in having raised his six sons, including British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, that has helped him find balance as a fighter and a family man.
